Project Description
Home Builders Association of Charlotte
Excellence In Remodeling 2010 – Gold Award Winner Attic
This home is situated on an attractive cul-de-sac in
the South Charlotte area. The homes in the subdivision are large
and most were built with high rooflines that greatly facilitate
attic improvements.
The architect developed a plan that included a generously sized
open stairway with a large landing at the midpoint. A closet
adjacent to the second floor hallway was preempted to allow for
the imposing stairwell.
Between the large footprint of the stairwell, the full bath,
closet and the large guest room the plan added nearly 400 square
feet to the original 3,000 square foot home. Virtually the
entire original attic was utilized by the living area and the
HVAC equipment.
To minimize the disruption to the occupied area of the home
during the 3-month construction process, the contractor
constructed a large outdoor temporary stairs with an attached
debris chute. The window opening was temporarily enlarged to
allow for materials to be brought into the attic area.
