Project Description
Home Builders Association of Charlotte
Excellence In Remodeling 2010 – Gold Award Winner Basement
This home is situated on an attractive
property that backs up to a cove on scenic Lake Norman. The
view from the 2nd story deck and third floor of the
home is spectacular. The client desired to enhance the value of
his home by adding brick veneer to the sides and rear of the
home as well as by adding a beautiful deck made of Ipe wood from
Brazil.
The contractor was pleased that the existing foundation
protruded sufficiently to support the brick veneer on all sides
of the home.
As the project progressed, the client
envisioned adding some entertainment space at ground level under
the new deck. The contractor suggested the alternative of
converting some of the unimproved crawl space into a game room
and bar area with bathroom. The client agreed.
In order to allow added light and to
enhance the view of the lake from the ground level room, the
plan included excavating a few feet below the ground level. A
double door entry with a wide stairs and raised ceiling area
increased the effective ceiling height and made the room more
inviting. Additional windows insured that the room would be
bright despite being recessed beneath the high deck. The top
interior step was extended across the entire front of the room
to act as a serving area and decorative touch tying the pool
table and bar areas of the room together. Built-in bookcases
were added to the right wall of the Game room and a bar was
situated on the left side. A Bathroom was also installed on the
left side of the project.
As the room use will normally be in the
summer months when most activity is outdoors, the client opted
to forgo interior stairs. This factor allowed for enlarged
useable area in the Basement.
