The young family desired more space for their growing family. The Ranch style home presented two options: either to go up to a second story, or to go out the back into a large and private back yard.
To preserve the optimum living area on a single floor, the decision was made to create a master suite wing by extending the left rear side of the main floor. An additional guest bedroom, bath and a children’s playroom were part of the newly created lower floor. The slope of the backyard allowed for these rooms to be above grade. A small covered patio area is accessed from the lower floor playroom or from the lower rear patio area.
To balance the left rear new “master suite wing” a generously sized screened porch was built on the right rear side. The U shape configuration formed an attractive, decorative concrete courtyard at the same level as the main floor. A patio was also created several steps below the intimate courtyard to help break up the decent and increase the connection to the sloping back yard.
The total new heated area was approximately 1400 square feet. The elimination of one bedroom and formal dining room on the main floor allowed the remaining rooms to be resized. Walls were removed to make each remaining room larger and to open up the living areas between the kitchen, family room and breakfast room.
Extra width was added to the hallway to the master suite to act as a gallery and to ease the connection with the main living areas of the home.
